Two Graduate Research Assistant Positions (MSc/PhD) in Entomology at Louisiana State University (LSU)

Overview:

The IGLab | Precision Pest Management at LSU invites applications for two Graduate Research Assistant positions (MSc or PhD level) in the areas of precision pest management, machine learning, and GIS-based remote sensing analysis. These positions provide opportunities to build professional skills and contribute to advanced research. We are looking for motivated graduate students to join our team and contribute to two research projects:

  • Project 1: Focuses on insect and weed detection using machine learning, image analysis, computer vision, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and robotics.
  • Project 2: Focuses on remote sensing using drone and satellite imagery, as well as the development of web-based applications for data analysis and decision support.

Successful candidates will be responsible for designing and conducting research experiments, collecting and analyzing field and geospatial data, presenting results at scientific conferences, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Students will collaborate with a diverse team of experts in Entomology, Agronomy, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Statistics, Geography, and Computer Science.

The preferred start date for these positions is Spring 2026. International candidates are encouraged to apply, and submission of valid English Proficiency test scores are required.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, geography, geospatial sciences, biological or agricultural engineering, agricultural sciences, or similar).

  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, JavaScript, or other related languages.
  • Strong software skills in ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, and other related software.
  • Strong experience in machine learning, image analysis, computer vision, and remote sensing data analysis.
  • Strong experience flying drones and willingness to apply for an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English with a demonstrated record of research.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and capacity for independent work. Field work experience is preferred.
