Michigan Tech Position Description

Dr. Sandeep Chitta’s research group in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering at Michigan Technological University is seeking applications for a funded PhD position in Civil Engineering with a focus on Geotechnical Engineering, starting in Spring 2026. The selected candidate will engage in both experimental and numerical research related to biologically mediated soil improvement and granular mechanics. The work involves designing and developing custom experimental apparatuses, preparing cemented soil specimens, performing FEM/DEM-based modeling, and conducting standard geotechnical laboratory testing.

Required Qualifications

  • A master’s degree of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, mining engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in numerical modeling of geotechnical engineering issues.
  • Proficiency in programming tools (MATLAB, Python, etc.) and strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
