Summary:
This role is a combination of a Driver and Field Research Helper, with responsibilities including the upkeep of field equipment, transporting research gear, communicating with local community members, and following instructions for data collection. Moreover, the individual should be capable of aiding, as required, in the transportation of individuals, samples, and equipment to and from different locations in Ghana using NAMRU vehicles.

Duties
- Serve as a research field assistant, where the primary responsibilities include aiding in the placement of entomological and mammalian traps. Additionally, the role involves maintaining these traps through tasks such as cleaning and repairs.
- The incumbent is also tasked with the pickup and delivery of scientific equipment and supplies from various field sites, supporting research protocols as required.
- The individual may be required to serve as an intermediary between senior scientists and members of the community. This involves the daily collection of samples from hospital labs and transporting them to designated laboratories, including the Noguchi lab or any other facility as specified by the Director of NAMRU-EURAFCENT.
- Routine upkeep of pickup trucks and SUVs designated for research site visits.
- Daily trips might be necessary to transport personnel, materials, or documents between different locations within the Accra Metropolitan Area.
- Responsible for the thorough inspection of each vehicle for damage before and after each trip, inspecting vehicle for fuel level, all fluid levels, battery fluid levels and connections, properly inflated tires and tire tread, fire extinguishers, jacks, and all safety devices including brakes all lights horn, mirrors, and seatbelts.
- All vehicular accidents are promptly reported, and comprehensive accident reports are accurately completed before being submitted to the Director of NAMRU-EURAFCENT
Qualifications and Evaluations
Requirements:
EXPERIENCE: The candidate is required to possess a minimum of one year of job-related experience as a field assistant, and two years driving experience.
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of vehicle operation. Knowledge of local traffic laws and regulations. Knowledge of local terrain and traffic conditions.Education Requirements:
Mandatory: Completion of secondary school is required.
Evaluations:
LANGUAGE:
- Mandatory: Limited knowledge; speaking, reading & writing English.
- Good working knowledge; speaking, reading & writing any Ghanaian language.
- Limited knowledge; speaking, reading & writing French.
- Limited knowledge; speaking, reading & writing Twi.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Physically able to perform loading and unloading.
- Must be able to handle heavy objects smoothly and efficiently.
- Must be able to able to lift a maximum of 51 lbs. (23kg) under OSHA standards.
- Ability to use warehouse tools and safely operate equipment such as forklifts, hand trolleys, electronic lifters etc.
- Must be able to diagnose and handle preventive maintenance and first-tier automotive repairs.
- Ability to detect vehicle defects and report them immediately to supervisor.
- Must be able to perform assigned tasks in all types of weather, and environmental conditions to include at times severe cold, extreme heat, wet or dry weather conditions, and high winds.
- Must hold a valid “Class B” driver’s license and have had the license for at least five years.
