We’re seeking motivated PhD students in Industrial Engineering at Clemson University for cutting-edge research in data science, applied statistics, AI, and nonlinear optimization applied to manufacturing, energy, and more. Successful applicants join Dr. Jeong’s Industrial Data Science Lab in Spring/Fall 2026 with full funding. Research directions include AI-driven digital twins and IoT-enabled data science for improving engineering systems.
Qualifications
- Currently hold, or be in the process of completing, a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, Machine Learning, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Proficiency in R, Python, or other relevant programming and computational tools
- Passion for, or demonstrated interest in, interdisciplinary research at the intersection of data science, optimization, and applications in manufacturing, energy, and/or other engineering systems
- Prior research experience in applied statistics, machine learning, or nonlinear optimization (preferred but not required)
- Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to work effectively in collaborative environments

About the PI
Dr. Cheoljoon Jeong is an Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering at Clemson University. He holds a PhD in Industrial and Operations Engineering and a dual degree in Statistics from the University of Michigan. His research focuses on industrial data science, AI, quality engineering, and digital twin methodologies for smart manufacturing. Dr. Jeong is active in professional communities like INFORMS and IISE.
