Description
The School of Chemical Sciences (Food Science Programme) at the University of Auckland is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join Prof. Siew-Young Quek’s research group. This PhD in Food Science project is funded by the MBIE New Zealand – Singapore Future Food Research Programme, which focuses on transforming fruit and agricultural residues into high-value functional food ingredients. The successful candidate will work on optimizing bacterial cellulose (BC) fermentation using diverse agricultural substrates and developing scalable BC-based systems for probiotic encapsulation and delivery.
PhD position Candidate Requirements
- A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Food and Fermentation Science, Biotechnology, Bioprocess Engineering, Microbiology, or related field (GPA > 6.5; IELTS at least 6.5 with no bands lower than 6.0 for international applicants).
- Demonstrated research experience in microbial fermentation, bio-processing, or related laboratory techniques.
- Strong interest in sustainable food production and functional food innovation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and international teams.
- Experience with biopolymer characterization, pathogenic microbiology, or techno-economic modelling would be advantageous
