The Position (English Language/Literature Teacher At ICS Ghana)

The school is seeking to recruit a well-experienced, resilient and passionate professional with demonstrable commitment to excellence in teaching English Language/Literature at the Secondary Level (A-Level).

The English Teacher shall prepare and provide relevant learning activities that will enable students to learn the principles of the English language including the rules of grammar and syntax, to develop an understanding and appreciation of literature and to advance students’ verbal and written communication abilities.

He/She shall continuously review the IGCSE/A-Level English curriculum to make it relevant to both students and teachers.

Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Principal and Head of School, the candidate will be tasked with the following responsibilities:

  • Planning, preparing and teaching methods that will engage students and stimulate their intellectual curiosity including the use of effective questioning, clear presentation and good use of the available resources.
  • Identifying clear teaching objectives, content, structures and sequences of lessons appropriate to the educational needs of students.
  • Delivering lessons using a variety of differentiated instructional techniques that are appropriate to the academic level and meet the diverse needs of students
  • Maximizing the appropriate use of technology in the classroom as an instructional tool
  • Teaching grammar and syntax, vocabulary and word usage and other principles of the English language
  • Promoting students’ understanding of and appreciation for literature
  • Developing students’ verbal skills including reading out loud, discussion and debate
  • Developing students’ writing skills
  • Encouraging the development of critical thinking skills
  • Creating a safe and flexible classroom environment conducive to optimal student learning
  • Helping students to work independently and collaboratively in groups
  • Establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior that conform to the school’s policies and promote learning in the classroom
  • Establishing and monitoring appropriate behavior of students in extra-curricular activities
  • Tracking and monitoring student learning using a variety of techniques
  • Preparing and administering assessments that are curriculum-aligned
  • Grading assessments and assignments
  • Monitoring performance and progress and modifying instructional methods to meet individual needs where necessary
  • Fostering good working relationships with students, teachers, counselors, administrators and other stakeholders to support the development and well-being of the students
  • Keeping parents or guardians informed of students’ academic progress and social and behavioral issues
  • Maintaining accurate and complete student records including attendance, grades, assessments and test scores as required by the school procedures and regulations
  • Participating in staff meetings and training sessions
  • Undertaking professional development activities to ensure continued professional growth and development of teaching skills

Qualification, Skills And Experience:

 Bachelor’s degree in English. A Master’s degree in the same field is preferable with at least 3 years teaching experience with the Cambridge IGCSE/A-Level Curriculum for English.

  • Relevant certification or license required.
  • Passion for the teaching of English which you share enthusiastically with both colleagues and students.
  • Solid grounding in classroom management and school procedures.
  • Solid knowledge of subject matter including subject-specific curriculum and assessments.
  • Proficient in the use of technology and computer applications as required.
  • Up-to-date with latest teaching techniques and topics in English instruction.
  • Evidence of teaching high achieving students across all phases, and the ability to extend able students.
