There is a new job vacancy at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture(IITA) Ghana. IITA seeks to hire efficient individuals as  Community Research Supervisors.

Job Description

IITA Ghana is implementing the Program for Seed System Innovation of Vegetatively-propagated crops (VPCs) in Africa (PROSSIVA) which is geared towards development and validation of packages of innovations to strengthen functional seed systems of VPCs (Yam, Cassava, Banana, Sweet potato) and positively impact smallholder farmers and consumers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) by 2030.

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) therefore seeks to engage Community Research Supervisors under the PROSSIVA Program.

The Position

The Community Research Supervisors will provide overall leadership in support activities to identified stakeholders participating in the program in Northern and Ashanti regions of Ghana.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Facilitate the establishment and maintenance of demonstration trials (DTs)
  2. Identify one lead farmer (opinion leader) per community to work closely with.
  3. Together with community, identify suitable locations for demonstration trials (DTs)
  4. Collect data on the socio-economic and cultural characteristics of farmers involved in the project (age, household size, marital status, educational qualification, size of land cultivated with yam, gender-disaggregated roles in seed and ware yam value chain, etc.) and geographic location of plots.
  5. Facilitate the establishment and maintenance of DTs in participating communities.
  6. Monitor DTs regularly and sensitize seed yam entrepreneurs and yam farmers on improved technologies to increase productivity.
  7. Ensure farmers are fully involved in all activities carried out in the DTs (land preparation, preparation of planting materials, planting, weeding, and harvesting as well as fertilizer, herbicide, and pesticide application)
  8. Document all activities carried out on the DTs and include evidence (videos and pictures) in reports.
  9. Participate in the organization and conduct of field days (planting, green and brown field days) to analyse activities on the DTs and sensitize participants on improved technologies.
  10. Participate in training of out-growers and seed entrepreneurs on best practices for production, handling, packaging, transporting, and storing of yam planting materials.
  11. Document input providers, seed producers, marketer information
  12. Backstop private seed companies’ sales outlet owners on seed yam handling and storage.
  13. Periodically, conduct focus group discussions on pertinent issues such as the role of gender, youths and culture in seed yam production as advised by the supervisor;
  14. Document challenges encountered and lessons learned in carrying out activities.
  15. Submit weekly report of activities to supervisor.
  16. Any other activities assigned by the supervisor.

Duty Stations – Ejura and Tamale

Terms of appointment:

  • This is Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position.
  • Initial appointment is for Two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.

Required Skills or Experience

  • B.Sc./B.Tech. in Agriculture, Botany, Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, Agricultural  Extension, Crop Protection, Environmental Biology or related disciplines
  • Experience interacting virtually and physically with National Agricultural Research Institutes. Experience working with Private Seed Yam Companies and other yam value chain actors in Ghana would be an advantage.
  • At least 3 years working with vegetatively propagated root and tuber crops seed stakeholders.

Core competencies:
  • The holder of this position must be a results-orientated person who can manage and satisfy multiple and at times, conflicting organizational, partner and other stakeholder demands on the ground.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) in English. Language skills in any of the local dialects of the target regions is an advantage.
  • He /she must have partnership relation skills and be a strong team-player.
  • Has good interpersonal and networking skills.
  • Demonstrated evidence at working with grassroot partners in implementing activities.
  • Good computing skills in excel and word, in addition to knowledge in data collection using ICT tools is critical.
