President Akufo-Addo has nominated Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo as the new Chief Justice, according to a letter addressed to the Council of State on Tuesday, April 25.
The appointment, according to the President, was made to fill any potential vacancies that might occur after the incumbent Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin Yeboah, retires on May 24.
Mr. Anin Yeboah is scheduled to retire from the bench on his seventieth birthday, therefore it will be crucial to have a new Chief Justice in place as soon as possible to prevent a power vacuum.
“I have made the decision to initiate the appointment process now. According to Article 144 (1) of the constitution, which governs the appointment of a Chief Justice, I must first consult with the council of state before seeking approval from Parliament. Accordingly, I am nominating Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, a member of the Supreme Court, as the new Chief Justice. I have enclosed a copy of her curriculum vitae for your consideration,” the letter read.

Justice Mrs. Torkornoo’s nomination will be subjected to parliamentary scrutiny to determine whether or not she is approved. If she is confirmed, she will become Ghana’s third female Chief Justice, following in the footsteps of Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.

Biograghy of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo
Gertrude Torkornoo was born on September 11, 1962, in Cape Coast, Ghana, and is a native of Winneba in Ghana’s Central Region. She received her ordinary level certificate from Wesley Girls’ High School and her advanced level certificate from Achimota School. She attended the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, both of which she graduated from in 1986.
She received a Postgraduate Diploma in International Law and Organisation from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), part of Erasmus University in the Netherlands, in 2001. She earned an LLM in Intellectual Property Law from Golden Gate University in the United States in 2011.

Career
Prior to joining Nabarro Nathanson in London for an internship, Justice Torkornoo began her legal career as a volunteer at the FIDA Legal Aid Service.
She later joined Fugar & Co., a law company in Accra, as an associate and later returned as a director.
She co-founded Sozo Law Consult in 1997, where she worked as managing partner until May 14, 2004, when she was named a justice of the High Court of Ghana.
Up until October 2012, when she was elevated to the Court of Appeal, she served as a judge on the High Court.
She was appointed to the Ghanaian Supreme Court in November and took her oath of office on December 17, 2019.

Leadership
Justice Torkornoo has held a number of executive roles in the judicial branch.
As the Chair of the E-Justice Committee, she oversaw the planning for the automation of all court levels, the acquisition, and the incorporation of electronic tools and software into the work of the Judicial Service.
She has also served as the Commercial Courts’ supervising judge since 2013, and she has set the agenda for and presided over meetings and programming of the Commercial Courts’ Users Committee.
