Ph.D/M.S. Graduate Student Opportunity in Hydrology and Water Resources Management

Natural Resources Environmental Management (NREM) University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa The Natural Resources and Environmental Management Department within the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa invites applications for (1) Graduate Student to conduct research in the fields of surface hydrology. The successful candidates would join a project funded by NSF, whose broad goals are aimed at integrating climate and data science to improve situational awareness in Hawaiʻi through climate data products and models, and to conduct actionable science to benefit the communities and state.

This research team is led by Dr. Yinphan Tsang and collaborate with Dr. Christopher Shuler with support from University of Hawaiʻi’s Information Technology Services and computer scientists. This exciting project will use in-situ soil moisture measurement along with numerical model simulations and possible remote sensing technique to improve the spatial and temporal characterization of soil moisture for Hawaiʻi.

Research objectives include

  1. delineating fine resolution soil moisture distribution at a watershed scale and its assoication with streamflow generation and floods;
  2. delinating soil moisture distribution statewide.

The successful candidates will work with the possible research lab groups from field hydrology, atmospheric science, remote sensing, data science, and numerical modeling to describe the sensitivity of changes in soil moisture and its contribution to flood generation. The research team aim to optimize and quantify the soil moisture with available environmental measurements and analytical techniques. The team members will work together to achieve these goals and will contribute to the creation of a strong research enterprise that will help Hawaiʻi meet the existential threats posed by climate change.
