Masters Graduate Research Assistantship At Angelo State University, Texas.

There is a Master’s Graduate Research Assistantship in Ecology of Mexican Long-nosed bats at Angelo State University, Texas for summer 2023.

Position Description:

Now accepting applications for M. S. students to study the nightly movements of endangered, migratory Mexican Long-nosed Bats (Leptoncyteris nivalis) at Emory Cave in Big Bend National Park, Texas using GPS tags. Objectives include summarizing historic population trends at Emory Cave and using GPS tags to identify and characterize key foraging areas. The applicant will be under the supervision of Dr. Loren Ammerman. Travel, food, and lodging expenses will be provided during field events in June and July in Big Bend National Park.

Duties will include supervision of field crew, capturing and tagging individuals, retrieving data, maintaining equipment, characterizing foraging areas, data analysis, data submission to NABAT, assisting with reporting, and participating in scientific meetings. Data collected during this project will be included in the thesis of the successful applicant.   The successful candidate MUST be able to begin work on June 1, 2023.

Qualifications Required:

B. S. in biology, ecology, wildlife science, or a closely related field. Must meet requirements of admission to Angelo State University graduate program in biology (3.0 minimum GPA).

Also required is a strong work ethic, good verbal and written communication skills, the ability to follow all permit conditions, the ability to troubleshoot, leadership skills, the ability to work and hike under physically-demanding field conditions (backpacking in the Chihuahuan desert), acceptable rabies titer or willingness to receive rabies prophylactic vaccine, proof of full vaccination for COVID-19, and ability to qualify for a valid Texas driver’s license.

Must be able to begin on June 1, 2023.

Desired qualifications include field experience, bat handling experience, familiarity with White Nose syndrome field guidelines, experience camping, navigation skills, comfort learning and applying technology to field techniques, experience with vegetation analysis, and experience organizing large amounts of data.

Familiarity with NABAT and GIS is preferred.   Please contact Loren Ammerman for more information. Admission to the Biology Graduate Program is required. Applicants should have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
