Interesting facts about the Al Janoub Stadium.
Football fans around the world are intrigued by one of the eight stadiums used to host matches at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 because of its distinctive external design.
22 kilometres south of the centre of Doha, in the southern city of Al Wakrah, sits the 44,325-seat Al Janoub Stadium. One of Qatar’s oldest continually inhabited cities is this one.
The stadium can be utilised all year round thanks to an innovative cooling system and flexible roof. It was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and AECOM.
The unique design of Qatar’s Al Janoub Stadium
The eye-catching design of the stadium pays homage to Al Wakrah’s historical involvement in pearl diving and fishing by evoking the wind-filled sails of Qatar’s ancient dhow boats.
The stadium’s resemblance to female genitalia is what makes it more well-known among supporters.
As a result, it has earned the moniker “Vag*na” Stadium among sports enthusiasts worldwide.
Dame Zara Hadid, an Iraqi-British architect, artist, and designer, created the stadium.
Hadid claims that the dhow sailing boat’s flowing shape, along with conventional Arabian pearl diving and a fishing craft, served as her inspiration for the design.
“It’s really embarrassing they come up with nonsense stuff like this,” she said. “What are they saying? Everything with a hole in it is a vag*na? That’s ridiculous.”
Which Matches Would Be Played in the “Vag$na” Stadium?
The stadium has already hosted five World Cup games and will hold one round-of-16 match in addition to the conclusion of Group H between Ghana and Uruguay.
What happens to the Al Janoub Stadium after the Qatar 2022 World Cup?
After the competition, Al Janoub’s seating will be decreased to 20,000 and donated to other international football development initiatives.
The lowered capacity is intended to guarantee an electric atmosphere for Al Wakrah SC matches.
In addition to football, the arena is surrounded by lush parkland that offers sporting and recreational amenities that will be beneficial to the entire community for years to come.
It has playgrounds for kids, running and cycling trails, and other open spaces.
The community will eventually have a marketplace and amenities including a mosque and a school.
Al Janoub Stadium is served by a network of new expressways and roads which provide easy access to residents and visitors to both Al Wakrah and Doha.
The stadium will be served by Al Wakrah station on the Red Line of the Doha Metro. The station is located 4.5km from the stadium and will be served by shuttle bus services on match days.
The precinct has dedicated bus stops, interconnected cycling paths and safe pedestrian routes.
Legacy and sustainability
Al Janoub Stadium was delivered by a number of Qatari businesses, including MIDMAC and PORR Qatar, Coastal, which made the stadium seats, and SOLB26, which produced the steel needed for the stadium.
The Qatari economy has benefited from more than 50% of the stadium’s construction-related investment.
