The Ghana Football Association has divulged that each national team member received a $20,000 appearance fee for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In an interview with Accra-based Starr FM, the GFA’s Communications Director, Henry Asante-Twum, confirmed this.
The Black Stars had a bad tournament in Cameroon, finishing with a devastating 3-2 humiliation to debutants Comoros.
As a result of their failure to win any of their three group matches, Ghana finished bottom of Group C.
After three group matches, they had only one point, making this their poorest AFCON since CAN 2006 in Egypt.
Furthermore, this is the first time the Black Stars have been ousted from the AFCON in the group stages since 2006.
“The players were paid $20,000 as appearance fee, they didn’t earn any bonus because they did not win a single game,” Asante-Twum said.
The FA’s Communications Director also shot down speculations that Chris Hughton would be appointed as Ghana’s next coach.
He added The Ghana Football Association, President Kurt Okraku was in Germany seeking to persuade Otto Addo to take over as coach of the Black Stars for the forthcoming World Cup playoff against Nigeria.
“The FA hasn’t taken any such decision, with specific reference to the last meeting before the President traveled, it was Otto Addo coming in as the stop-gap coach for the two matches.”
“There was no discussion about his assistants,” Asante-Twum added.
Since the firing of Milovan Rajevac two weeks ago, the Black Stars have been without a coach.
Chris Hughton, according to the government and the majority of citizens, is the most qualified person for the role.
