Teacher Kwadwo, officially Michael Owusu Afriyie, a well-known Ghanaian comedian, has voiced significant concern about the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s (KNUST) incapacity to invent even a pencil.

Teacher Kwadwo on KNUST after 70 years

Former Ghana Education Service (GES) employee, speaking on Kingdom FM, claimed the Kumasi-based higher institution has failed to live up to its mission as a scientific and technology university. He actually added, though, that it is not the institution’s responsibility, but rather the fault of the country’s past and present leaders.

“All my life, I am 33 years now, what has KNUST invented in terms of technology to help Ghana. It is not their making. I respect KNUST so much, the reason I even wanted to school there. I say, it is not their fault but our leader’s,”  he stated

He proceeded to disparage the government for failing to support the country’s research and development institutions.

You are the one who has failed to provide the necessary assistance. When I say leaders, I’m referring to both former and current ones. Our two major political parties are to fault, in my opinion. “Teacher Kwadwo continued, “They all contributed to this menace.”

He lamented the apathy of government appointees to Ghanaians’ situation once more. He emphasized that if they truly cared about us, there would be no need for ICT to be implemented in classrooms sans computers.

Teacher Kwadwo reminded Ghanaians that despite the new curriculum being implemented years ago, schools still lack textbooks. A key source of concern must be the paucity of learning materials.

His submission was widely publicized. He decries the lacklustre path our system has taken, which is a disaster waiting to happen.
