Ezra Matthew Miller was born in Wyckoff, New Jersey, to Marta (Koch), a modern dancer, and Robert S. Miller, a former senior vice president of Hyperion Books and Workman Publishing. They are the younger of two sisters. Ezra’s father is of Ashkenazi Jewish origin, and his mother is of German-Dutch ancestry; they have defined themselves as Jewish and “spiritual.”

Miller attended Rockland Country Day School and The Hudson School as a youth and sung with the Metropolitan Opera. After appearing in the independent film Afterschool (2008), Miller went on to star in the television shows Californication (2007), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999), and Royal Pains (2009), as well as the films City Island (2009), Every Day (2010), Beware the Gonzo (2010), and Another Happy Day (2010). In the dramatic thriller We Need to Talk About Kevin, Miller received great acclaim for his performance as Kevin Khatchadourian, the homicidal son of Tilda Swinton’s character (2011).
