Ezra Matthew Miller was born in Wyckoff, New Jersey, to Marta (Koch), a modern dancer, and Robert S. Miller, a former senior vice president of Hyperion Books and Workman Publishing. They are the younger of two sisters. Ezra’s father is of Ashkenazi Jewish origin, and his mother is of German-Dutch ancestry; they have defined themselves as Jewish and “spiritual.”


Miller attended Rockland Country Day School and The Hudson School as a youth and sung with the Metropolitan Opera. After appearing in the independent film Afterschool (2008), Miller went on to star in the television shows Californication (2007), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999), and Royal Pains (2009), as well as the films City Island (2009), Every Day (2010), Beware the Gonzo (2010), and Another Happy Day (2010).
