Conservation Aquaculture. Propagating rare native Sonora Sucker fish for insect control and restocking – Master’s Assistantship, University of Arizona, Tucson: Arizona Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, School of Natural Resources and the Environment and Department of Environmental Science

Working closely with Private, Federal, State Agencies and Universities to develop methods to produce and rear native Sonora Sucker for insect control and restoring Southwestern aquatic ecosystems. Little information is known about propagating and rearing this species in captivity. Research will be conducted at hatchery/laboratory facilities and field sites in Southwest. Arizona’s diverse aquatic communities include desert springs, roaring canyon-bound rivers, and coldwater mountaintop streams.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an aquatic biology related discipline with strong skills/interest in aquaculture and quantitative techniques; outstanding recommendations; minimum GPA of 3.0; do-it-yourself light plumbing/construction skills. Energetic, optimistic students that work well with people, and independently under challenging conditions are encouraged to apply.
