ECG Prepaid Issues: Has the ECG prepaid central database been hacked?

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is still trying to fix the technical issue it had with prepaid customers using the E-cash and PNS metering systems. It has been four days since the systems went down on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Some inquiries are made. The actual problems that are driving this situation, meanwhile, have not yet been discussed by the ECG.

Although there is no shortage of electricity, many prepaid customers have been left without power since they are unable to top off their accounts or purchase prepaid credits in order to establish connections or obtain power.

The source codes for the systems are currently in the ownership of outside parties, who are purportedly refusing to give them to the ECG, according to internal ECG sources.

ECG has been quiet about the suspected cyberattack aside from a series of notifications describing the technical challenge of running the prepaid system without interruption and assuring customers that the business was working “assiduously to remedy the fault.”

According to reports, the ECG has asked for help in resolving the problem and is currently conducting an investigation.

National Security and Cyber Security Authority representatives are on-site to assist the ECG in bringing the systems back up.

Also, the ECG is conducting a thorough system audit to determine the root cause of the technical problem that has disrupted service to many of its prepaid clients across the country.

ECG Prepaid Issues: Currently Affected Areas 

Customers in the Greater Accra, Central, Eastern, Western, and Volta regions can now buy electricity when they visit their district offices, according to the most recent report on the ECG’s problem with prepaid systems.

Customers were given the reassurance that a team was working to restore the services in the impacted areas, including Kumasi and Tema, as well as the mobile app and third-party vending machines.
