Daddy Lumba was born 29 September 1964. Lumba was in a village called Nsuta Amangoase in the Sekyere Central District, near Mampong in the Ashanti Region. He is widely regarded as the greatest Ghanaian musician of all time.

His father, Owoahene Kwadwo Fosu, a teacher, died when Lumba was only a child. His mother, Comfort Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Saah, was also a teacher. She died in 2001 in Kumasi. Her death was a devastating blow to Lumba, as she was literally everything to him. Many of Daddy Lumba’s songs were dedicated to her including “Anidasoɔ Wɔhɔ Ma Obiara”, “Ohia Asɛm”, “Ɛmmere Pa Bɛba”, “Agya Bi Wua Agya Bi Tease”

Career and Education

Daddy Lumba’s musical career began when he was 16 years old. From the 1983 to 1984 school year, under Christabel’s direction as music teacher, he served as the choir leader at Juaben Senior High School.

He graduated in 1985. With his pals Yaw and Kwabena, as well as Theresa Abebrese, his girlfriend, Lumba founded the Lumba Brothers band at Juaben SHS. After school, with the help of his girlfriend Theresa, Lumba travelled to Germany to seek greener pastures.

Daddy Lumba’s Music Career

In Germany, he met Ernest Nana Acheampong. Nana Acheampong had already formed a group titled talking drums with a white man. The only music Lumba was familiar with at the time was gospel; he attributes Nana Acheampong with introducing him to highlife.

They formed another group called Lumba Brothers, which had the same name as his first group when he was in Juaben SHS.

The pair intended to release an album in 1986, but due to financial constraints, the album was released in 1989 with the assistance of Lumba’s wife, Akosua Serwaa, who produced the album. The album’s title is Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu.

Since then, he has consistently released multiple hit albums and has established himself as one of Ghana’s most popular Highlife singers.

Through his smash hit album Woho Kyere, he introduced a future love song master, Ofori Amponsah in 1999. In 1999, Daddy Lumba’s collaboration with the rising star resulted in five hits, catapulting Ofori Amponsah to fame. He has launched the careers of 13 different Ghanaian musicians.

At the Ghana Music Awards in 1999, he won three awards: Best Album, Artist of the Year, and Most Popular Song of the Year.

His solo career has not been without controversy; one minute he releases a gospel album, the next he shocks people with provocative lyrics and music videos. He has also been accused of skin bleaching. However, he has denied bleaching his skin.

He has his own studio where he does all of his work, as well as machines for mastering, cassette duplication, loading, printing, and shrink wrapping. His music has evolved over time to reflect changes in taste and demand for music, and he is now classified as a contemporary highlife artist. He recently launched an ultra-modern radio station, DL FM 106.9, to commemorate his 58th birthday.

Daddy Lumba has won several Ghana Music Awards as well as other excellence awards, and his music continues to appeal to both young and old people.

The majority of his songs featured female singers Yvonne Ohene Djan, better known as SHE, and Ateaa Tina.
